2014 Pinot Noir Coteau Palmer - WE 90pts!

$51.00 USD

Located in the northern Los Alamos Valley, Premier Vineyard is at the intersection of 101 North and Palmer Road. "Coteau Palmer" or "Palmer Hillside" is my own fanciful description of this block, tucked back in a canyon, on a steep sandy hill.

Planted to Swiss Clone 2A and Dijon Clone 115, the vines are now over 20 years old. The block faces southwest, and enjoys fantastic exposure all day while being sheltered by the surrounding hills. Yields barely reach 2 tons per acre, and the clusters and berries are very small.

Characteristics of the vintage:

The 2014 vintage wines showed the serious drought was in effect with a high ratio of skins to juice. These wines have a silky feel and an enormous, dense mid palate that will carry them for many years ahead.  Whole cluster fermentation adds multi dimensional aromatics and extra tannin to frame the big ball of fruit. The 2014 seems to be filled with energy & holding on tight ready to develop & unwind.

Vineyard: 100% Premier Vineyard Los Alamos

Alcohol: 13.2%

Wine Enthusiast 90pts - " Dried cherry, rusty earth, tangy eucalyptus and an intriguing mushroom quality show on the nose of this bottling by Benjamin Silver. The palate is consumed by earthy tones of dried mint and muddy clay while also showing black-cherry and mulberry flavors. This is a very unique bottling unlike many others in the region." M.K.
The Tasting Panel 90pts - "Silky, bright, and juicy with notes of spice and cherry; balanced and generous with depth. ADBlue"

2014 Sangiovese Santa Barbara County

$44.00 USD

The beautiful 2014 is a drought year vintage from Oak Savanna's old vines.

Aged in a large format barrel (860L tonneaux). This normally red fruit driven vineyard became a dark fruit driven wine, with power, in this vintage. The elevation of the vineyard & the characteristics of the clone, adds freshness and finesse.

The only reason the 2014 isn't vineyard designated, is the alcohol hit 14%.

Red and dark fruits together, structure with finesse, spice and length.

Alcohol: 14%

2015 Sangiovese Oak Savanna Vineyard

$44.00 USD

The 2015 is my 3rd vintage producing a traditional large format barrel (860L tonneaux) 100% Sangiovese vineyard designation from Oak Savanna Vineyard’s old vines.

Oak Savanna Vineyard, planted in 1978, is part of the Zaca Ranch in Los Olivos. Sharing a common vineyard entrance with Zaca Mesa’s vineyards & Demetria.

The Oak Savanna Vineyard was owned by actor James Garner when I was winemaker at Zaca Mesa in the late 1990’s.

Aromatics: Black cherries, cranberry, dried herbs, lavender, white chocolate, white pepper, nutmeg, and cinnamon spice.

Body: Both power & elegance in 2015. The velvet like richness in the mid-palate has a core of ripe red & dark fruits. The tannins are refined and well-integrated.

Enjoy the wine with Pasta al Forno, Spaghetti Bolognese, or Bistecca alla Fiorentina.

Alcohol: 13.5%

2015 Sangiovese White Hawk Vineyard

$44.00 USD

From the wind beaten hillside at White Hawk Vineyard in Los Alamos. Silica-rich, ancient sand dune soils.

The 2015 vintage Sangiovese WHK Vineyard is more open knit, dark fruit driven, and earthy than the Oak Savanna. There's a dense mid palate weight in the 2015's. Aged in 700L seasoned French Oak barrels.

Approachable and very smooth.

Only 145 cases produced. 13.5% alcohol.

2016 Nebbiolo South Block - WE 91pts

$44.00 USD

The 2016 Nebbiolo was picked from a different block than all the other vintages. This block is interplanted with Pinot Noir rows to help reduce vigor, and the rows run North - South.

The South Block is lighter, bright & floral, with good acidity and integrated tannin.

Aroma:  Red licorice spice, tar, nutmeg, menthol, & a lifted sweetness. Almost freshly cut sawdust.

Body: Silky smooth red fruits with their bright acidity. It’s more elegant and pretty than broadly structured., hence more feminine like a Barbaresco. Great balance & easy drinking with many foods, especially your favorite charcuterie platter. The 2016 will continue to age well and get even more silky smooth over the next 6 years.

Food Pairing: Charcuterie is always a good choice with Nebbiolo. The 2016 will also pair with Sushi, or thinly sliced skirt steak, grilled.

Background: Sourced from vines planted in the early 1980's at Lucas & Lewellyn's Rancho Don Miguel in Los Alamos.

Harvest Date: October 25, 2016
Cases produced: 145
Alcohol: 13.6%

Reviews: Wine Enthusiast - 91pts

Smoothly integrated aromas of baked cranberry and rose meet with salt, pepper, walnut and classic tar notes on the nose of this bottling. It's still pleasantly taut on the palate, where nutty flavors weave through roasted strawberry and savory elements. — Matt Kettmann

2016 Pinot Noir Coteau Palmer - WE 92pts Editor's Choice

Review: WE 92pts Editor's Choice

Benjamin Silver has been making wine a long time in Santa Barbara and knows how to wait out a release. This patience led to a savory streak on this bottling, starting with rustic aromas of cherry, mushroom, pine and dewy sagebrush. That translates into Kalamata olive, earthy pine duff and dried berries on the palate. — Matt Kettmann

2017 Sangiovese Santa Barbara County

$41.00 USD

Broad shouldered, smooth, lifted bright red fruits, with an earthy core. From a vintage that is built to age, the 2017 has lots of upfront bold fruit and baking spice to enjoy now. The earthiness will show more as the wine ages. Both elegant & powerful.

2017 Syrah Oak Savanna Vineyard

$44.00 USD

The big, bold 2017 vintage thrusts blackberry spiced fruit to the front, giving the taster a mouthful of ripe Syrah with integrated tannin and flowery notes in the nose.

As the wine settles in the glass, the layered nuances of black fruits, spiced roasted meats, peppercorn and tobacco unfold as the elegance appears.

In a tight vintage, such as 2017, the elegance from the higher elevation helps to entertain from start to finish. This wine is still a baby and will get better and better over the next 10 years.

Food pairing: Great steak wine, or anything off the grill!

2018 Nebbiolo North Block

$44.00 USD

The 2018 vintage is what we refer to as the "Peter Pan" vintage, producing wines that never wanted to grow up. Right now they showcase layers of fruit.

Aroma: Bright red fruit with a lifted floral bouquet of rose petals, fresh crushed strawberry, raspberry, and cherry fruit, and spearmint.

Body: A juicy red fruit core: strawberry & raspberry fruit, with good acidity. Smooth with integrated tannins.

Food Pairing: Charcuterie is always a good choice with Nebbiolo. The 2018 will also accompany roasted chicken, shish kabobs, bbq skewered vegetables, or grilled salmon with a maple syrup or honey glaze.

El Ojo Rojo Pinot Noir

$34.00 USD

Very elegant & finessed 2015 Pinot Noir blended with a little 2016 and 2017. 100% stem inclusion. Los Alamos Valley

General style of vintage: Very aromatic, elegant, spicy, floral & red fruit driven, medium bodied.

Aromas: Red rose petals with white flowers, cinnamon, & ripe strawberry fruit.

Body: Right now, showing a tight bright red fruit mid palate, with medium depth and some darker fruits. Bright, ripe and wanting to stretch its legs.

Cellar: Drink now until 2028+

Serving Suggestion: New world Pinot glass with a big bowl served around 60-65F shows the balance. A smaller more focused bowl shows off the intense aromatics.
